The ASF – Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority clarified the main differences between health insurance and health plans for consumers, after receiving numerous complaints due to confusion between the two products.
Health Insurance
- Insurance contract.
- Covers health risks (consultations, surgeries, hospitalizations).
- It may include reimbursements and access to a network of affiliated providers.
- Supervised by the ASF and with formal complaint channels.
Health Insurance Plan
- Discounted product, without risk coverage.
- Offered by clinics, hospitals, retailers, etc.
- Provides access to reduced prices, but without refunds or extended coverage.
- Not supervised by the ASF.
Important Note
- Insurance policies require waiting periods (because there is risk coverage).
- Not the plans, as they only function as discount cards.
ASF Recommendations to Insurance Companies
- Do not use the term "plan" in insurance.
- Avoid products similar to health insurance plans.
- Clearly explain the nature of contracts to consumers.
- Promote educational campaigns on your digital channels.
